How to Vet a China Makeup Brush Manufacturer: 12-Point Checklist

A no-fluff vetting checklist for sourcing makeup brushes from China — factory vs trading company, audits, sample tests and payment terms.

Most "factory" listings on Alibaba are trading companies with no production line. Here's how to tell the difference in under an hour — and the 12 checks we'd run before wiring a deposit.

Trading company vs real factory

Six fast tells:

  • Business license scope must include "manufacturing" (制造) — trading-only licenses say "wholesale" (批发).
  • Factory video tour on demand, walking the production line live (not edited B-roll).
  • Employee count matches the facility size — 20 staff in a "10,000 m² factory" is a red flag.
  • In-house tooling — a real brush factory owns ferrule-crimping and handle-printing machines, not just an assembly bench.
  • MOQ honesty — true factories rarely accept under 500 pcs; ultra-low MOQs usually mean reselling stock.
  • Certifications in their own name — ISO 9001 / BSCI / SEDEX certs should list the factory name, not a parent trading entity.

The 12-point vetting checklist

#CheckWhy it matters
1Business license (营业执照)Confirms legal entity, scope, capital
2Export licenseWithout it, you'll need a third-party exporter
3ISO 9001 + BSCI / SEDEXQuality system + social compliance
4Factory audit report (SGS / TÜV)Independent verification of capacity
5Live video tourCatches Photoshopped marketing
6Reference clients (named)"We make for big brands" without names = lie
7Sample within 7–10 daysFaster = stock; slower than 14 days = capacity issue
8Third-party lab test on sampleHair shed, ferrule pull, handle drop
9Payment terms 30/70100% upfront = scam risk
10T/T to corporate accountPersonal account = no recourse
11English-speaking project managerSaves weeks of WeChat translation chaos
12Pre-shipment inspection clauseRight to inspect before final payment

Sample tests anyone can run at home

  • Hair shed test: rub the brush on white paper 20 times — more than 3 hairs = poor ferrule glue.
  • Ferrule pull test: grip the ferrule and tug the hair bundle firmly. It should not loosen.
  • Handle drop test: drop the brush handle-first onto a hardwood floor from 1.2 m. Plastic should not crack.
  • Water test: wash the brush 5 times. Color from dyed hair should not bleed onto white tissue.

Red flags that should kill the deal

  • Refuses video tour ("our boss doesn't allow filming").
  • Won't share business license number for independent lookup.
  • Quotes drop 40% after one push-back — means original price was inflated, trust is broken.
  • All photos watermarked from the same Alibaba template.
