These terms are used interchangeably online, even by factories. They are not the same thing — and confusing them costs brands money and IP.
The actual definitions
White label = a generic product the factory sells to many brands. Same formula, same packaging shape, your logo on it. Think gym-brand BCAA powders.
Private label = a product developed (formula and/or packaging) for your brand exclusively. Other brands can't buy the same SKU.
OEM = factory manufactures to your full spec (you own the design). ODM = factory designs and manufactures; you license the design.

Start white-label for SKU 1–2 to validate demand. Once you hit consistent reorders, move winners to private label and lock down exclusivity before competitors copy your packaging.
Red flag
If a factory shows you photos of "your" finished product before you've sent artwork, you're white-labeling. Make sure that's what you wanted.
