Synthetic vs Natural Makeup Brush Fibers: A Material Comparison for Brands

Side-by-side comparison of goat, squirrel, pony, XGF, PBT and nylon brush fibers — performance, cost, vegan positioning and which formulas each fiber suits.

Fiber choice drives 30-45% of a brush cost and almost all of the perceived quality. This comparison is written for product developers choosing between synthetic and natural makeup brush fibers.

Natural fibers

FiberFeelBest forRelative cost
Goat (grey / white / Saikoho)Soft, high pick-upPowder, blush, highlighterMedium to high
Squirrel (Canadian, blue)Extremely soft, low controlLuxury powder, eyeshadow washVery high
PonyMedium-soft, resilientEye blending, budget powderLow to medium
Sable / KolinskyFine point, springyDetail, gel liner, lipHigh

Natural hair has a cuticle structure that holds loose powder exceptionally well, but it absorbs liquid and cream formulas, is harder to sanitise, cannot be marketed as vegan, and faces increasing import scrutiny in the EU and US.

Synthetic fibers

FiberFeelBest forRelative cost
XGF (tapered, ultra-fine)Very soft, natural-hair-likePowder, blush, luxury vegan linesMedium-high
PBT (tapered)Soft, resilientAll-round vegan setsMedium
NylonFirm, smoothFoundation, concealer, gel linerLow-medium

Synthetics are non-porous, so they waste far less cream and liquid product, dry fast, resist bacteria and are fully vegan-compliant.

Choosing by formula

  • Loose powder / mineral — goat or XGF.
  • Cream blush, foundation, concealer — nylon or PBT, never natural hair.
  • Gel and liquid liner — fine nylon or synthetic sable.
  • Baked and pressed powders — XGF gives the best blend of pick-up and softness.

Positioning and claims

If you plan a vegan or cruelty-free claim, you need a signed non-animal-fiber declaration covering the fiber, the adhesive and the handle finish. Some glues and brush ferrule sealants are not vegan by default — specify this in the PO.

Durability testing

Whatever fiber you pick, require a shedding test (10 pull cycles), a wash test (30 wash cycles, shape retention) and a chemical resistance test against your own formulas — silicones in modern foundations can stiffen low-grade synthetics.
